Your family and visitors will be close by in our comfortable surgical waiting room, which features light refreshments. Our team will provide updates to your family or visitor in person or via phone should they need to leave the hospital.
Pre- and Post-Operative Care
Pre-operative education classes are provided for all total hip and total knee replacement patients. The class helps people learn what to expect while in the hospital and during their recovery.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn how to prepare for going home. Arrangements for outpatient therapy at one of our rehabilitation facilities can also be made during this class.
After surgery, patients are cared for on our 3-East patient care unit which is specially designated for joint replacement patients and is staffed by nurses who are experienced in meeting their unique needs. The unit, which opened in 2022, features modern, private rooms with the latest technologies and amenities for patients’ comfort and convenience.
Our on-site rehab gym provides our patients the opportunity to work with skilled therapists. In addition, patients will work alongside others who have had similar surgeries, providing support and encouragement for each other. Our nursing and rehabilitation staff work together with the goal of having patients ready for discharge in the afternoon of the day following surgery.
Most patients are able to go directly home from the hospital and are able to walk with a rolling walker, go up and down stairs and perform their activities of daily living in a modified but safe capacity.
Convenient, free parking is available at RWJUH Rahway for patients and visitors.
