Audiology services, such as hearing exams, are provided at RWJ Rahway. Hearing aids are not dispensed at the hospital. For an audiology appointment, call 732.499.6012.
Speech-Language
The Speech-Language Department at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient evaluations and treatments for those with communicative, cognitive, and swallowing disorders.
Specialty outpatient programs include Vital Stim and E-Stim for the treatment
of dysphagia, Lee Silverman Voice Therapy Protocol for the treatment of
Parkinson's disease, and pediatric/adult speech/language therapy.
The Speech-Language Department serves preschool/school-aged children and
individuals with acquired difficulty in speech, language, memory, cognition,
and swallowing due to stroke, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s
disease, multiple sclerosis and ALS. The department is staffed by Speech-Language
Pathologists who are certified by the American Speech-Hearing Association.

Preschool and school-aged children.
We have extensive experience treating adults with difficulty in speech,
language, memory, cognition, and swallowing secondary to
- Stroke (CVA)
- Brain tumor
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Neuromuscular disease (Parkinson’s, ALS, MS)
- Head and neck cancers
Specific disorders treated include:
- Aphasia – language disorders which affect understanding, speaking, reading and writing skills.
- Apraxia – a motor speech disorder which affects voluntary movements of speech muscles.
- Dysarthria – a speech disorder in which pronunciation is unclear. Volume and rate may also be affected.
- Dysphagia – difficulty in swallowing food and liquid.
- Voice disorders, disfluency or stuttering
- Tracheotomy and laryngectomy – a surgical procedure in which the larynx (voice box) is removed due to cancer.
- Cognitive-linguistic disorder – impairment in the ability to think and process information.
- Articulation/language disorders – difficulty producing speech especially in preschool and elementary school children.

- VitalStim and E Stim for dysphagia for swallowing disorders
- Lee Silverman Voice Therapy Protocol for the treatment of Parkinson's disease
