About Our Program
Each year, esophageal disorders affect millions of people. A hollow tube made of muscle, the esophagus moves food and liquid from the mouth and throat to the stomach. The most common symptoms of esophageal disorders are difficulty swallowing, heartburn and regurgitation.
At RWJUH’s Esophageal Center, we offer a cutting-edge approach to treating disorders of the esophagus. Our team is comprised of multidiscipline physicians and health care providers from advanced endoscopy, thoracic surgery, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, nutrition, pain management, pathology and radiology to ensure that the best therapies are chosen to treat your disorder. Treatments range from dietary management and medication to minimally invasive endoscopic, laparoscopic or robotic surgical solutions.
Our program treats common and complex esophageal disorders/diseases, such as:
- Achalasia
- Barrett’s Esophagus
- Dysphagia (trouble swallowing)
- Esophageal Cancer and Non-Cancer Lesions
- Esophageal Motility Disorders (EMDs)
- Esophageal Perforation
- Esophageal Scleroderma
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Heartburn (Acid Reflux)
- Hiatal Hernia
- Non-cardiac chest pain
- Zenker’s Diverticulum
Our patients are also able to take advantage of the robust clinical and translational research program at the Esophageal Center, which includes clinical trials of new medications, surgical interventions and endoscopic therapeutics. Partnerships with Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers-Cancer Institute grant access to cutting-edge treatments and techniques, cross-disciplinary collaborations and technological advancements specifically designed to improve health outcomes. RWJUH has recently invested in acquiring innovative technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of endoscopic diseases. These include confocal endomicroscopy, optical coherence tomography, radiofrequency ablation probes and generators, fourth generation endoscopic instruments and state-of-the-art interventional endoscopy rooms.
The goal of the Esophageal Center at RWJUH is to provide patients with thorough diagnosis, surveillance, management and intervention for a spectrum of esophageal disorders. This program allows for the opportunity to expand treatment options for individuals with benign and malignant esophageal conditions through innovative technologies and multidisciplinary involvement.
