Balance Disorders

Patients with balance disorders complain of dizziness, vertigo, the feeling or sensation of spinning or of being off-center. Our neurologists and neurosurgeons diagnose and treat balance dysfunction that is the result of neurologic disorders or neurologic impairment. While the vast majority of balance problems are caused by problems with the inner ear, there may be neurological causes for balance disorders which require neurological care.

Causes may include acoustic neuroma — a benign tumor of the auditory nerve that can grow large enough to warrant removal through surgery or through focused radiation. Stroke and other degenerative neurological conditions also may create disruptions in balance.

Monmouth neurologists provide comprehensive evaluation and care of patients in collaboration with audiologists, physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists.

Patients with balance disorders who require rehabilitation services after treatment may receive services at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, our preferred acute rehabilitation care provider.
