What Is a Metastatic Tumor of the Spine?
A metastatic spine tumor occurs when cancer cells from another part of the body spread to the spine through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Unlike primary spinal tumors that originate in the spine itself, these secondary tumors represent cancer that has traveled from other organs. The spine is one of the most common sites for cancer to spread, particularly in patients with lung, breast or prostate cancer.
Metastatic Spine Tumor Causes
Cancer can spread to the spine through several mechanisms:
- Direct spread through the bloodstream
- Movement through the lymphatic system
- Extension from nearby tissues
Certain factors can increase the likelihood of spine metastasis, including:
- The type of primary cancer
- Stage of the original cancer
- Presence of cancer in other parts of the body
- Individual genetic factors
- Overall health status
Metastatic Spine Tumor Symptoms
A person with metastatic spine tumors may notice symptoms that can develop slowly over time or come on suddenly. Many people first experience back pain that feels different from typical back pain — it might get worse at night or when they are active, and unlike regular back pain, it does not seem to get better with rest. This pain may also spread to other areas of the body.
They might also experience changes in how their body feels and moves. Some people notice numbness or tingling sensations in their arms or legs, while others find their muscles becoming weaker. They may notice it is harder to walk or keep their balance like they used to.
In some cases, they might have trouble controlling their bladder or bowels or find that they are less sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. While rare, severe cases can lead to paralysis or changes in the shape or stability of the spine.
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, especially if they're persistent or getting worse, it's important to have them evaluated by a healthcare provider. Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and improve your quality of life.wewww2p-p
Metastatic Spine Tumor Diagnosis
Our specialists take a thorough, step-by-step approach to understand a patient’s condition completely. We begin with a detailed review of their medical history and symptoms, carefully examining how they have developed over time. During a physical examination, our doctors will assess neurological function and evaluate their overall physical health, including reviewing any history of primary cancer.
To get a clear picture of what is happening, doctors will use advanced imaging technology. This may include:
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (both with and without contrast)
- Computed tomography (CT) scans of bones
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scans to identify areas where cancer might be active
- Bone scans to check if cancer has spread to other bones
- X-rays to evaluate the stability of the spine
This comprehensive evaluation may also include additional testing to ensure we have all the information needed for a patient’s care, including bloodwork, image-guided biopsies, molecular testing of tumor tissue and specialized tests to evaluate nerve function.
Metastatic Spine Tumor Treatment
Our approach to metastatic spine cancer treatment considers several key factors, including the tumor type and grade, its location and size, the patient’s age and overall health, and personal preferences and goals.
Our radiation oncologists use targeted techniques to precisely deliver treatment while protecting healthy brain tissue. We offer several advanced treatment options including:
- Stereotactic radiosurgery. A high-dose, tightly focused radiation beam localized to the brain for both benign and malignant tumors.
- CyberKnife. A robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors throughout the body noninvasively.
- Gamma Knife. A stereotactic radiosurgery device that allows our neurologists to treat neurological conditions without surgery.
- Proton beam therapy. Radiation surgery with proton beams, which can stop at a certain tissue depth, allowing radiation to be directed to a specific location within the tumor.
Our experienced neurosurgeons can perform advanced procedures to remove tumors, relieve pressure on nerves, and stabilize your spine.
We also provide treatments that work throughout your body to fight cancer cells, such as:
- Chemotherapy
- Immunotherapy
- Hormone therapy
To support our patients’ overall well-being, we offer comprehensive services including pain management, physical therapy, and emotional support. Through our partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute, you'll also have access to the latest clinical trials and treatment advances. Our experienced team is here to support you every step of the way, focused on providing advanced care while maintaining your quality of life.
Prognosis for Metastatic Tumors of the Spine
The outlook for metastatic tumors of the spine depends mainly on the patient’s age, overall health, and whether the tumor is malignant or benign.
