With close to a hundred guests comprising hospital executives and medical leadership, key donors and community partners, and elected officials in attendance, Jersey City Medical Center officially opened the Lord Abbett Maternity Wing at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Tuesday, January 14.
“The partnership of business and health care is critical for the well-being and growth of our community,” said Michael Prilutsky, President and CEO, Jersey City Medical Center. “Through the generous support and outstanding partnership of Lord Abbett, the Lord Abbett Maternity wing offers a family-centric birthing experience that matches the world-class labor and delivery services available at Jersey City Medical Center.”
The new wing was made possible through a generous $1 million donation from Lord, Abbett & Co. LLC (Lord Abbett), an independent, privately held investment management firm based in Jersey City.
“Lord Abbett recently celebrated its 90th Anniversary. As a firm that believes the strength of the organization is our people—and the strength of our people is family—I can think of no better way to help kick off our next 90 years than with the opening of the Lord Abbett Maternity Wing at Jersey City Medical Center,” said Douglas B. Sieg, Managing Partner, Lord Abbett. “Our partnership with Jersey City Medical Center-RWJBarnabas Health to create this state-of-the-art wing is a meaningful demonstration of our long-term commitment to supporting generations of families in this diverse and vibrant community.”
The new 17,500 square-foot, innovative floor adds 20 private mother-baby rooms, designed to promote family bonding and provide the best outcomes for newborns, mothers, and families. Room features, floor amenities, and modern equipment on the new wing are all focused on providing a family-centric birthing experience. Some of the key features include:

- Hotel-like accommodations, including a couch that turns into a sleeping space, spacious bathroom, smart TV with streaming service and USB to charge electronic devices
- Comfortable, modern family waiting and seating areas, and a nutrition room with a refrigerator, ice/water machine and coffee/tea
- Each room is equipped with a Work station on Wheels (WOW) for nursing charting, keeping the nurse in close proximity of the patient room
- Halo bassinets have advanced design that provides easier access and support for breastfeeding while also providing a safe sleep space
- Lactation room with private stalls
Recognized as a national leader in quality, Jersey City Medical Center also offers a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and a full range of pre-and post-natal classes. To date, JCMC’s NICU has had zero cases of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), achieving the rare distinction of being “CLABSI-free” for six years.
In 2019, close to 2,000 newborns were welcomed at Jersey City Medical Center, including the successful delivery of the first set of quintuplets born in Hudson County. This year, hospital staff celebrated the birth of New Jersey’s first newborn of 2020 at the stroke of midnight.
