Maternal Fetal Medicine
The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) at Jersey City Medical Center provides an exceptional level of high-risk maternity and neonatal care, and is recognized for quality comprehensive care for women during their high-risk pregnancies.
Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Unit is staffed by a highly skilled and compassionate a team of experts led by perinatologists who are board-certified in obstetrics/ gynecology and maternal fetal medicine services.
The Antenatal Testing Unit provides obstetrical ultrasounds and diagnostic images for women with high risk pregnancies. First, second and third trimester ultrasounds are performed for chromosomal abnormalities, as well as evaluation for risk preterm birth, surveillance therapy; including interventional procedures, such as an amniocentesis. Doppler ultrasound is also used to evaluate blood flow in the umbilical cord and fetal brain as well as blood flow in the fetus or placenta.
Patients are seen following the referral of an obstetrician who has determined that a pregnancy-related condition requires the expertise of specialists, which includes, but is not limited to:
- Hypertension
- High blood pressure
- Preeclampsia (toxemia)
- Diabetes
- Thyroid disease
- Infectious diseases
- Multiple births (twins, triplets, or more)
- Recurrent preterm labor and delivery
- Incompetent cervix
- Premature rupture of membranes
- Suspected fetal growth restriction (baby not growing enough)
- Suspected abnormalities in the fetus
