Nurse Midwives at Community Medical Center
Our Certified Nurse Midwives
Community Medical Center’s medical staff includes certified nurse-midwives who are specially trained to provide maternity, newborn and well-woman gynecological care.
Nurse-midwives work in collaboration with physicians when a problem pregnancy arises in addition to primarily focusing on delivering care to women with uncomplicated, low-risk pregnancies. This includes prenatal care, labor and delivery management, post-partum care and newborn care. Nurse midwives also provide life-long gynecological care from the stages of adolescence to the postmenopausal years.
A Tradition in Caring and Offering a Lifetime of Care
Following a philosophy that pregnancy and childbirth are healthy, normal life events, for many centuries, nurse midwives have been providing women personalized obstetrical care that is family-oriented. They offer education, advice and support to mothers-to-be and their families---before, during and after childbirth. Nurse midwives are also skilled in the use of advanced childbirth techniques.
About Nurse Midwives
Registered nurses who have completed advanced studies in women's health and midwifery are certified nurse midwives. Nurse midwives are graduates from one of the more than thirty advanced educational programs accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and have also passed a national certification exam as well as New Jersey state licensure under the Board of Medical Examiners.
During Pregnancy and the Childbirth Experience
Nurse-midwives monitor the health of mother-to-be and their unborn babies.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and taking an active part in the educational process which could include reviewing handout materials, reading suggested articles and books about childbirth and attending childbirth preparation classes are encouraged. It’s also important that patients come prepared with questions to ask their nurse midwife during their visits for prenatal care.
Women who receive care from a nurse midwife affiliated with Community Medical Center deliver their babies at the Medical Center.
During the labor and delivery process, a nurse midwife evaluates the progress of their patient while also providing emotional and physical support. While natural childbirth is encouraged, nurse midwives can prescribe medications for pain relief and also request anesthesia services if the need should arise.
After the birth, nurse midwives provide breastfeeding and infant care education and support in addition to addressing any concerns a new mother may have.
Caring for Women Throughout Their Lives
Nurse-midwives also provide women with gynecological exams, prescriptions, information and assistance for family planning, care before conception, mammography screening, management of menopause and health maintenance and disease prevention.
