Spyglass Direct Visualization Program

New Jersey Gastroenterology Diagnostic & Surgical Procedures

The Spyglass Direct Visualization System is a fiber-optic camera used to perform diagnostic and surgical gastroenterology procedures. This thin, flexible tool can quickly navigate the inner lining of the gastrointestinal system and provide doctors with a detailed live video feed. Thanks to this advanced imaging technology, many digestive health procedures can be performed without the use of open surgery.

Spyglass technology is often used for:

  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Breaking stones
  • Taking biopsies
  • Reducing the use of X-rays to minimize radiation exposure
  • Minimally invasive surgeries

Spyglass Technology and ECRP

The Spyglass system is an alternative method of performing Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatogram (ECRP). An ECRP is used to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile and pancreatic ducts. Traditionally, ECRPs require two endoscopists to oversee the procedure. The Spyglass system is far more advanced than traditional endoscopes and only requires one operator. However, Spyglass is more costly than conventional ECRPs, which is why it is not often used unless a traditional ECRP fails or the physician decides Spyglass is a better fit for the patient.
