Cultural Medical Programs

Ensuring Equitable Health Care for Our Communities

High-quality health care is for everybody.

At RWJBarnabas Health, we strive to ensure racial, ethnic and cultural equity in the way we provide care to the people and communities we serve. Some communities face barriers to care that we address with focused attention to these specific communities' health care needs.

We are dedicated to providing care that is patient-centered, unbiased, culturally competent, and socially and behaviorally supportive. To do this, we consider the language, literacy and cultures of our communities and build programs around them.

Our programs cater to the African American, Chinese, Hispanic and Latinx, and Indian communities.

African American Medical Program

The African American Medical Program, available at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, extends services to Black and Brown communities in our region and addresses historical barriers to health. Our doctors are experienced in treating conditions that are prevalent in the black and brown communities, such as heart disease and gastrointestinal disease, and we are committed to providing culturally competent care.

Chinese Medical Programs

Our Chinese-focused programs are dedicated to ensuring that we meet the medical needs of the growing Chinese American population in New Jersey. Dedicated, Chinese-speaking patient navigators provide personal assistance to help patients easily access cost-efficient, high-quality care. Our navigators can also help you find providers who speak your language and who understand special health challenges that are more prevalent in Chinese communities, such as heart disease, cancer and gastrointestinal disease.

Hispanic and Latinx Medical Programs

The Hispanic and Latinx-focused medical programs serve centers of health and wellness information for Latino families. We focus on addressing the unmet needs of the local Latino community for specific disparities of medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obesity and cancer. The Health Ministry is dedicated to assisting religious leaders, their families and congregations by connecting them to health care providers and services.

Indian Medical Program

We are committed to serving the needs of Indian patients in Central New Jersey. In our Indian Medical Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset our navigators can help Indian patients and their families find providers who speak their language and who understand special health challenges that are more prevalent in Indian communities, such as heart conditions, high blood pressure, digestive issues, infectious diseases, cancer, and orthopedic issues. We also offer health screenings in local communities, including senior centers and apartment buildings, pharmacies, libraries, restaurants and more, and attend and support local communities’ events and activities.
