Inpatient
The Children’s Crisis Intervention Service is the only state-designated program in Monmouth and Ocean counties that provides inpatient treatment for children and adolescents with acute emotional, behavioral or psychological problems.
The 19-bed unit provides care for children and adolescents age 5 to 17 residing in Monmouth and Ocean counties who have been screened for psychiatric admission through the hospital’s Psychiatric Emergency Screening Services (PESS). The PESS Unit includes a special room designated for pediatric patients.
The unit’s team of professionals treats children for a host of psychiatric conditions, including mood disorders such as major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder.
Outpatient
Through the RWJBarnabas Health Institute for Prevention, The Unterberg Children's Hospital offers a host of programs designed to reduce the factors that place families and communities at risk and to promote healthy lifestyles. Programs include:
Strengthening Families
Monmouth County parents, grandparents, guardians and their youth have access to Strengthening Families, a free 14-week education program that teaches participants how to improve communication skills, develop effective conflict resolution techniques, set goals and establish family meetings. The program has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a model parenting program. Gifts are awarded to families with regular attendance, and upon completion of the program, a graduation ceremony is held. Funding in Monmouth County is provided by the Monmouth County Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
Tobacco Dependence Treatment Program
RWJBarnabas Health Institute for Prevention has helped thousands of people, including teens, overcome their addiction to nicotine. Its Tobacco Dependence Treatment Program is staffed with certified professionals who provide treatment under the Public Health Service guidelines. Participants in the program are offered an individualized quit-smoking plan, access to individual or group counseling, tools to reduce withdrawal symptoms and manage stress and up-to-date information on the latest prescription and over-the-counter medications.
Children in the Middle
RWJBarnabas Health Institute for Prevention's Children in the Middle is an evidence-based divorce education program that teaches parents and guardians to identify and address the needs of children growing up between two homes. High conflict divorce increases the stress and anxiety typically experienced by children and can place them at risk for behavior problems, depression, delinquency, substance use, teen pregnancy, school failure and dropout, and suicide. In this course, parents and guardians gain tools to manage their conflict effectively and learn how to avoid putting their children in the middle of their personal, social and financial issues.
