IB-Stim Alleviates IBS Pain and Functional Abdominal Pain

Device Targets Pain Center in Brain

IB-Stim is a nonsurgical device that alleviates chronic abdominal pain in children by sending gentle electrical impulses into specific nerve bundles in the ear. This stimulation targets the brain's pain center, helping to reduce pain associated with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional abdominal pain.

As the only FDA-approved treatment for pediatric patients with these gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, IB-Stim offers a new path to relief for children ages 11 to 18.

RWJBarnabas Health is proud to be one of the only centers in New Jersey offering this advanced treatment through our specialized pediatric GI team.

How to Prepare for the Procedure

IB-Stim is a noninvasive procedure. The best preparation is to ensure your child’s comfort. Make sure your health care provider is informed of your child’s medication regimen.

  • Rest and have a light meal. Make sure your child is well-rested and has had a light meal.
  • Wear comfortable clothing. Dress your child in comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the ear area.
  • Review medications. Discuss any current medications with your health care provider to ensure there are no contraindications.

What to Expect Before the Procedure

Before placement of IB-Stim, you can expect:

  • Evaluation. Your child will have a brief review by a healthcare provider.
  • Detailed explanation. The healthcare provider will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions.
  • Preparation. The ear area will be cleaned and prepared for the device application.

What to Expect During the Placement of IB-Stim

  • Gentle placement. The IB-Stim device has four leads with tiny sterile needles. It will be gently placed on your child's ear. Most children don't even feel them, but some might feel a slight pinch initially. The leads are attached to a small generator secured behind the ear with adhesive. The device will stimulate nerves throughout the day and night.
  • Mild sensation. Your child may feel mild electrical impulses, which are generally well-tolerated and not painful.
  • Quick and non-invasive. The procedure is quick and non-invasive, allowing your child to relax during the application.

What to Expect When Wearing the Device

  • Device wear. Your child will wear the device for 4 consecutive weeks.
  • Regular follow-ups. Regular follow-ups will be scheduled to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Symptom improvement. Patients can expect improved GI symptoms, daily functioning, somatization (expression of physical symptoms caused by psychological distress), global health and psychological comorbidities.
  • Safety. No significant side effects have been reported.
