Hip Fracture Surgery Program
Resources for Your Recovery
RWJBarnabas Health’s Hip Fracture Surgery Program offers comprehensive care, from surgery through rehabilitation and recovery.
Our multidisciplinary team includes orthopedic surgeons, advance practice providers, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and patient care technicians who are specially trained in hip fracture care.
Being physically active, eating right and developing healthy habits are key to your recovery after hip fracture surgery. We offer inpatient and outpatient resources to help you get better faster.
Surgery
A hip fracture may be able to be repaired with surgery. If damage to the bone is severe, hip replacement may be required.
- Hip repair surgery/pinning. For less severe fractures, metal screws, rods, or plates are used to hold the bone together while it heals.
- Hip replacement. Depending on the severity of the injury and the condition of the hip bones, a hip may be either partially or fully replaced with prosthetic parts.
Patient Education – What to Expect Before, During and After Surgery
Educating our patients about what to expect before, during and after hip fracture surgery is an important part of our program. We make sure you are prepared with knowledge that will enable you to recover successfully.

Rehabilitation
If you have surgery for a hip fracture, you will need rehabilitation to help strengthen and increase the mobility of your hip. Your orthopedic care team will determine whether your rehabilitation requires inpatient rehabilitation at a skilled nursing facility, home health care or outpatient therapy.
RWJBarnabas Health offers convenient outpatient physical therapy locations throughout New Jersey.
Bone Density Testing
Osteoporosis is a major risk factor for hip fractures. Talk to your doctor about getting assessed for osteoporosis and treatment options to help prevent fractures in the future.
The Rutgers Health Osteoporosis Center, an RWJBarnabas Health partner, offers evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis.
RWJBarnabas Health facilities offer bone density testing to evaluate your bone health.
Nutritional Counseling
Proper nutrition is important for maintaining strong bones and for healing the body. RWJBarnabas Health offers nutrition counseling to help you have a healthy recovery.
Nicotine and Tobacco Recovery
Besides being bad for your overall health, nicotine can hinder recovery from surgery. RWJBarnabas Health’s Institute for Prevention and Recovery offers a Nicotine and Tobacco Recovery Program to assist in overcoming addiction to nicotine. If you are addicted, quit smoking or vaping with our help.
