Symptoms of an Endocrine Disorder
The symptoms of an endocrine disorder vary depending on which gland is affected. Generally, endocrine disorders cause fatigue and physical weakness. You may also experience depression, impotence, anxiety, abnormal heart rate, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, and recurring headaches. A lab test is usually required confirm the diagnosis. These may include blood, urine, or imaging tests.
The Treatment Plan
Most endocrine disorders affect hormone production, which can usually be managed with medication. There are numerous medications that both increase and block hormone production in the body. While these are not “cures,” managing the symptoms significantly improves quality of life. It is important to work closely with your endocrinologist to create a schedule for medication. Timing and dosage is very important in endocrine disorder management.
In some cases, endocrine disorders are caused by a tumor growing on the gland. In these cases, removing the tumor through surgery is often the best option. Chemotherapy can also shrink the tumor and make it easier to manage. Your doctor will work with you to determine the right treatment plan.
