Insurance for Diabetes Care
We participate with many insurance plans
Your health insurance company may cover you for diabetes self management education and/or medical nutrition therapy benefits with the diagnosis of diabetes or gestational diabetes.
A prescription from your doctor for medical nutrition therapy or diabetes self management education is required prior to making an appointment. The prescription should state what service is being recommended (medical nutrition therapy or diabetes self management education) and the diagnosis code. We will verify your insurance information and contact you prior to your appointment or class and inform you on your coverage and/or copayment. We encourage you to check with your health insurance provider to determine if you have this benefit as well.
Medicare
You must have a written order from your doctor for medical nutrition therapy and diabetes self management classes. Medicare Part B covers medical nutrition therapy services and diabetes self management classes for people with diabetes.
The first year you are diagnosed with diabetes Medicare covers three hours of individual medical nutrition therapy. For each subsequent year, Medicare covers two hours of individual medical nutrition therapy. If your condition, treatment, or diagnosis changes, you may be able to get more counseling. If treatment is needed into the next calendar year, a new referral is needed.
Medicare covers diabetes self-management training (classes) once in a lifetime. People with diabetes may receive both medical nutrition therapy and diabetes self-management training in the same year.
We encourage you to call medicare to verify benefits as medicare allowances may change or differ by type of plan.
