Housing Options

For various reasons, sometimes an older adult may no longer be able to reside or find difficulty residing in his or her own home. Several different housing options are available in the community. Before selecting housing, it is important to consider the individual's needs, personal preferences, finances and location. Once a housing option has been determined, it is recommended that you tour the facility and obtain costs and service information to ensure your loved ones' needs will be met.

Housing options include, but are not limited, to the following:

1. Continuum Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)

A CCRC is a residential alternative for adults that offers independent living unit (an apartment or cottage), residential amenities and access to a continuum of long term care services, including assisted living and skilled nursing care, as residents' health and social needs change over time.

2. Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC):

A NORC is a community of generally low-income residents who receive a mix of public services. Some NORCs serve people of all income levels to furnish cost-effective transportation services while others serve relatively affluent households and charge $1,000 or even more in annual dues, and support paid and volunteer staffers who provide a rich variety of support services and cultural enrichment activities.

3. Assisted Living Facilities (ALF):

ALFs provide supervision or assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing/undressing, feeding and grooming; coordination of services by outside health care providers, including, medicine, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy; and monitoring of resident activities to help to ensure their health, safety, and well-being.

SNFs are licensed facilities that provide the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. These facilities offer a safe, therapeutic environment for individuals requiring rehabilitative care and are unable to live independently due to functional or cognitive impairment. Most skilled nursing facilities staff a licensed physician to supervise patient care, nurses and other medical professionals to provide various support services such as physical therapy, speech therapy, and recreational and occupational therapy.
