If you smoke, it is very important to quit smoking as a part of your new healthy lifestyle and to help lower the risk of complications after surgery. Smoking after surgery can increase the risk of blood clots, ulcers, heart disease and cancer. Smoking can also affect wound healing. If you need assistance in quitting smoking, visit the Nicotine and Tobacco Recovery Program.
