Post-COVID Recovery Program

Treating Long-Term Effects of the Coronavirus

Post-COVID Recovery meeting between doctor and patientThe COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a tremendous impact on many patients' physical and emotional health.

While many people recover from COVID-19 completely, there is a population of survivors who suffer long-term effects of the virus. These individuals are sometimes called “long-haulers.” Their lasting symptoms interfere with their ability to return to their prior life and activities.

To help people manage what has been called “post-COVID syndrome” or "long COVID," Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School have created the Post-COVID Recovery Program.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

To address the myriad of issues each person may face due to their infection, we took a multidisciplinary approach to crafting your care team. Our team of experts includes a nurse navigator, social worker, physician, nutritionist, psychologist, physical therapist, respiratory therapist, neurocognitive specialist, research coordinator and mental health specialist.

The program will focus on addressing these issues:

  • Behavioral Health: Treat issues with stress, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Cardiology: Evaluate for arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, stroke
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation/Pulmonary Rehab: Improve cardiac and pulmonary conditioning
  • Cognitive Assessment and Therapy: Monitor subtle changes in brain function, such as memory loss and increased reflex reaction time
  • Physical, Speech and Occupational Rehabilitation: Provide re-conditioning due to fatigue, joint pain and stroke recovery
  • Nutritional Services: Educate on healthy eating and weight loss
  • Pulmonology/Sleep Therapy: Address underlying pulmonary (lung) issues along with assessment of sleep disturbances such as insomnia
  • Support: Identify financial and social barriers related to recovery such as loss of employment

To help future patients, the clinic will collect and share research data to answer questions related to COVID-19 recovery and treatment.
