The H.H. Tuchman Pediatric Emergency Center is dedicated to treating our youngest patients, with more than 10,000 children seen at RWJ Hamilton's emergency department each year.Care Especially for Kids
The pediatric emergency medicine program at RWJ Hamilton was designed specifically to treat children who are hurt, sick, scared and anxious. We recognize that children have unique emotional and physical needs – and care provided to children is not the same as care delivered to adults. A child's internal systems are still developing and they respond to treatment differently.
Serious, unique conditions often require the cooperation of specialists only available at a children's hospital, which is unavailable in the Greater Mercer region. The RWJBarnabas Health Care System – through the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at RWJ and community hospitals like RWJ Hamilton – are uniquely capable of treating children with specialized needs, right here in New Jersey.
Our program starts with physicians and nurses who have gone through extensive pediatric and emergency training. Board certified pediatricians and emergency physicians lead a team which also includes pediatric nurses and nurse practitioners.
About Our Center
Whenever possible, the care is delivered in a setting outside the busy
and sometimes stressful environment of our main emergency department.
Yet the most severe cases are treated in the main treatment area, where
the equipment and advanced care team is immediately available.
What We Treat
With the full range of emergency care available, our team can help with any problem you may be experiencing. Common symptoms we treat include sprains and broken bones, respiratory and allergic distress, uncontrolled high fever, and internal pain. Our team is also here to provide immediate care for significant injuries, poison, manifestations of chronic conditions such as cardiac, diabetes, neurological (brain) and hematological (blood) disorders.
When your pediatrician is unavailable, our pediatric emergency team can step in to help. In this case, we coordinate care with your physician when necessary. Timely reports are sent so the next day your pediatrician can resume care.
Designed for Peace and Comfort
The unit is equipped with eight rooms specially-designed to accommodate children and their families. The new space includes private bathrooms and furniture that allows parents to comfortably remain with their child for the duration of their treatment. Each room has children's books, artwork and age-appropriate activities.
The RWJ Partnership with the State's Leading Children's Hospital
RWJ Hamilton's pediatric emergency medicine program is supported by RWJ's Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital in New Brunswick. As a regional resource for pediatrics, and home to the state's only pediatric trauma center, the partnership with the children's hospital enables our patients to experience seamless access to this higher level of care through the Robert Wood Johnson Health System. This includes leading sub-specialist pediatric physicians and surgeons, when needed. As a health system, our physicians and staff work together on a daily basis to support our pediatric patients and their families.
