Treatment at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset promotes personal growth and healthy functioning, rather than simply correcting a problem. We provide a supportive and safe healing environment where our skilled staff helps patients understand their illness, build on existing strengths and develop new coping skills.

The Benefits of Hospital-Based Care

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset’s hospital-based program provides careful assessment of an individual both psychologically and physically. We integrate a full range of care into each patient’s treatment as appropriate to maximize the benefit of hospitalization, and the hospital’s diagnostic services assure accurate and swift testing.

Our Treatment Team

Our team, led by a board-certified medical director, re-evaluates each patient daily to ensure the best course of treatment. The team includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, licensed clinical social workers, adjunctive therapists and other behavioral health staff.

Levels of Care

Inpatient Treatment: Twenty-four hour care in a secure hospital setting for patients in acute stages of psychiatric illness. Aspects of this program include diagnostic evaluation, crisis stabilization and intensive treatment, with the goal of transfer to a lower level of care as soon as clinically appropriate.

Partial Hospitalization Program: Daytime treatment for those significantly impaired by a psychiatric, emotional or behavioral disorder but residence while participating in treatment Monday through Friday. Treatment also is available for those with the dual diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder and chemical dependency.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment: Patients benefit from active involvement in an organized therapeutic setting that emphasizes education, counseling and peer support. Attendees typically participate in this half-day program three days a week.

Treatment Options

Treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation to develop an individualized care plan.

Treatment may include:

  • One-on-one therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Medication management and education
  • Nutrition education
  • Family counseling and education
  • Chemical dependency education
  • Self-help groups
  • Stress reduction
  • Critical life issues

We encourage families to become involved in the treatment process, as they can contribute information about the patient’s life experiences. With the patient’s permission, family will meet with therapists to learn more about their loved one’s illness.

Discharge Planning

A carefully planned discharge is crucial to continued recovery. From the day of admission the treatment team begins to develop a comprehensive discharge plan to coordinate aftercare and any specialized services needed. Patients often are referred to their original clinicians or a community provider for ongoing support and care.
