Joseph R Neurosurgery - Joseph's Story

“Two months after surgery, I was chipping golf balls in my backyard. I’m now seven months post-surgery and have returned to doing all the things I love to do, including traveling, golfing regularly and playing with my two grandchildren, with no pain or discomfort whatsoever.”

A local business owner and supporter of Monmouth Medical Center for over 20 years, Joseph Romanowski is no stranger to the excellent medical care available to the residents of Monmouth County. That’s why, when Joe started to experience neck and shoulder pain, he looked no further than to Dr. Jonathan Lustgarten, Section Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Monmouth Medical Center.

“What I really appreciated about Jonathan was his conservative approach to treatment. We tried physical therapy and different medications, but ultimately decided together that surgery would be the best route to get me back to doing the things I enjoy doing every day.”

Joe had been suffering from four herniated discs with severe disc degeneration. On September 23, 2017, Dr. Lustgarten performed an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with screws and plates for stabilization. This allowed for decompression of Joe’s spinal cord and nerve roots.

“Two months after surgery, I was chipping golf balls in my backyard. I’m now seven months post-surgery and have returned to doing all the things I love to do, including traveling, golfing regularly and playing with my two grandchildren, with no pain or discomfort whatsoever,” says Joe. “I truly believe in Monmouth Medical Center, Dr. Lustgarten and his clinical team. They were there for me when I needed them the most and have given me back my best quality of life.”
