DaJuan H DaJuan’s Story: A Testament of Strength

“Dr. Mamkin has been with DaJuan since he was a baby, closely monitoring his conditions and providing exceptional, compassionate care.”

DaJuan Holmes, a vibrant 14-year-old from Newark, NJ, has faced a unique set of challenges since birth, but his resilience and passions still shine brightly.

Diagnosed with Dandy-Walker syndrome, autism, and hypothyroidism at a young age, DaJuan has been receiving physical, occupational, and speech therapy throughout his life. These therapies have been instrumental in helping him build strength and improve his fine motor skills.

In addition to these medical needs, DaJuan also battles severe eczema, but with the help of anti-inflammatory injections twice a month, his condition is managed more effectively. Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) has been an essential resource for DaJuan, helping him and his family navigate his challenges and healthcare journey.

“The care DaJuan receives at CBMC, especially from Irene Mamkin, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and a member of the RWJBH Medical Group, has made a significant difference in his life,” shares his mom, Tracy Russ-Holmes. “Dr. Mamkin has been with DaJuan since he was a baby, closely monitoring his conditions and providing exceptional, compassionate care.”

DaJuan HolmesAt a recent visit, DaJuan eagerly shared his love for the New Jersey Devils with Dr. Mamkin, who listened intently, showing a personal interest in his passion. “What sets Dr. Mamkin apart is the time and attention she gives to her patients. She always takes time to engage with DaJuan beyond his medical needs, ensuring he feels understood and supported,” explains Tracy.

“DaJuan is an incredible young man with a bright spirit and unwavering determination. Watching him grow over the years has been a privilege. His passion for life, especially his love for the Devils, is contagious, and it’s always a joy to hear him talk about the team,” shares Dr. Mamkin. “I’m honored to be part of his journey.”

Hockey became a significant part of DaJuan’s life thanks to Nassan’s Place, a non-profit organization in New Jersey that supports children with autism and their families. Since the moment he was introduced to the Devils, DaJuan has been following the team closely, watching games, learning about the players, and sharing his passion with everyone around him.

In addition to his love for hockey, DaJuan is currently a student at Central High School in Newark, NJ. He continues to work hard every day to overcome the challenges he faces. His journey is a testament to his strength and the strength of a supportive community, from his family, from CBMC, and from the organizations that nurture his passions.

In April 2025, DaJuan had the opportunity to meet Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton as part of Dougie’s Buddies, a new community program presented by RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH). This program gives local youth and their family a night out to a Devils game as Dougie’s personal guests. Participants are chosen from local organizations affiliated with RWJBH.
