Monmouth is among a handful of hospitals in New Jersey to acquire the LightSpeed QX/i system by GE Medical Systems, which creates higher-quality images by producing a 3-D cross-section view of a body area. This series of “slice by slice” X-rays are completely reconstructed, displayed and recorded in a matter of seconds, rather than minutes.
Because the system takes four images simultaneously at multiple angles,
data is acquired more quickly, allowing for larger areas of the body to
be scanned in a much shorter period of time. As a result, the advanced
scan takes about 20 seconds to complete, compared to the standard three-minute
CT body scan. Because these high-resolution images dramatically aid in
the visualization of specific areas of the body, it helps to improve the
detection of such abnormalities as coronary artery disease, lung cancer,
spinal disorders and stroke.
In terms of detecting heart disease, the calcified plaque in the coronary arteries can be measured and a coronary score then is calculated using sophisticated computer software. Even if the slightest indication of a problem is detected, patients can begin making heart-healthy lifestyle changes before the condition becomes serious.
