Spine Surgery
When medication, therapy and other conservative measures are not effective for back pain, spinal surgery is an option.
At Monmouth Medical Center, neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons work together to offer the most advanced surgical treatments to patients with spinal disorders, degenerative disease, or spinal injuries. This collaborative and interdisciplinary care assures that the most appropriate level of care is delivered by experienced surgeons who have a vast range of surgical skills for spinal care. Our neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons routinely perform minimally invasive spine surgery as well as traditional and reconstructive surgery and procedures to relieve back pain and restore function.
Surgical Treatment For Spinal Conditions:
Posterior Fossa Decompression – This treatment for chiari malformations involves removal of a small area of bone at the skull's base to stop compression of the cerebellum into the spinal cord. This delicate surgery enlarges the area at the base of the skull, thus relieving pressure and pain, so that the cerebellum returns to a proper position inside the skull.
Vertebral Tumor Surgery —Surgeons delicately remove benign and malignant vertebral tumors and restore function and form to the spine by reconstructing and reinforcing the area with titanium hardware.
Minimally Invasive Spinal Fusion – Involves use of advanced technologies to enable surgeons to work on multiple levels of the spine, repairing damaged discs from a lateral approach (from the side). Neurosurgeons insert spacers that re-establish proper alignment and stimulate fusion. Performed to eliminate motion between adjacent vertebrae, spinal fusion treats spondylolisthesis (unstable spine), and can be utilized to stabilize the spine after another surgery where bone is removed.
Kyphoplasty — This minimally invasive procedure is performed to treat painful compression fractures of the spine often caused by osteoporosis or trauma, when conservative measures are not appropriate due to age, pain, and other medical issues. Under image guidance, a balloon is inflated within the damaged area to gently reposition the vertebra. The space is filled with medical grade cement to repair the fracture and restore vertebral height.
Discectomy — Performed to treat nerve root or spinal cord compression usually caused by a herniated disc, this procedure involves removal of a portion of disc or bone fragment to relieve pain and pressure.
Foramenotomy —This procedure relieves nerve pressure or pinched nerves caused by bone or other tissue compressing nerves exiting the spinal column.
Laminectomy — Performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, this procedure is performed to treat spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. This procedure may be done with a spinal fusion to prevent instability, depending on the amount of bone removed.
Spinal Disc Replacement — When deemed appropriate for certain candidates, vertebral disc replacement is sometimes performed to treat specific types of back pain, instead of spinal fusion.
