Esophagus Strength Testing in New Jersey

Esophageal motility can be measured by a test called esophageal manometry. Your doctor may recommend this test if you are having difficulty swallowing.

When you swallow, the muscles of your esophagus contract and push liquids and foods down towards your stomach. If you experience pain or difficulty when swallowing, there is a good chance that an abnormality in the esophagus is responsible.

How It’s Done

This outpatient procedure is typically done in about one hour, but you should expect to spend several hours at the hospital or clinic for preparation and recovery. You will need to fast for eight hours before the test in order for it to be performed properly. When you are being your pre-operative preparation, you will be given a sedative to help you relax.

Once you are sedated, a thin, flexible tube is passed through the mouth or nose, into the esophagus, and finally into the stomach. You will be asked to swallow once the tube is in place. The tube is equipped with special sensors that measure the force and pressure of muscle contracts as you swallow, allowing the doctor to assess the strength of your esophagus.

When the test has concluded the doctor will analyze the results and determine whether or not an esophageal disorder is responsible for your swallowing difficulties. From there, we can start planning treatment and next steps.
