James and Sharon Maida Geriatrics Institute
Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus has long been a leader in geriatric medicine, which specifically addresses the unique care needs of older adults. Our one-of-a-kind James and Sharon Maida Geriatrics Institute provides integrated inpatient and outpatient geriatric services for patients 65 and older in one convenient location. In addition, our geriatricians—physicians specializing in the medical care of the elderly—have a full understanding of the wide range of physical, mental, medical, social, and spiritual issues that older adults can face.
With our many interlinked services, the experts at the Geriatrics Institute provide individualized care recommendations to ensure that patients receive the special care they require, without interfering with their independence. And our geriatric team works closely with you or your loved one’s primary care physician to make sure that all patient and family needs are met. With the expert treatment available at our state-of-the-art geriatrics outpatient practice, older adults can live the fullest life possible.
Our multidisciplinary team also includes nurses, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists, health educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and audiologists, all who specialize in the care of seniors and are available to accommodate the needs of patients as they transition from inpatient to outpatient care.
Complementing the Geriatrics Institute are the Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Unit, created to meet the more complex needs of seniors in emergency care, the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit, an inpatient unit utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to collaboratively develop a patient-centered care plan, and the Better Health program, which offers courses and more to men and women 55 and older who want to improve their health and well-being.

Rehabilitation Services
The Rehabilitation Services Department at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus (MMCSC) is dedicated to providing the best care for patients in a comfortable, caring and nurturing environment. The staff is comprised of highly-skilled, experienced therapists with advanced training in their specialty.
Improving patient health and meeting rehabilitation needs are the main priorities for all rehabilitative modalities. Treatment is focused on returning patients to their regular daily activities as quickly as possible. Additionally, patient education and home exercise is highly emphasized so that patients are active participants in their therapy. Patient involvement is critical and vastly improves clinical outcomes.
Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Unit
Our state-of-the-art GEM Unit offers an interdisciplinary team specialized in caring for aging patients by exploring the underlying causes of medical issues, including interventions by a pharmacist and consultations with a board-certified geriatrician. The unit is separate from the rest of the emergency department to offer a quieter, calmer setting.
Along with the quiet environment, there is subdued lighting, air mattresses and lower beds, slip-resistant floors, social workers and nurses with specialized training for geriatric patients. Most geriatric patients go to the ED because of drug interactions, so there is a pharmacist who focuses on that particular issue as well.
Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit
The Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit is a single-room inpatient unit exclusively for patients 65 and older. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to collaboratively develop a patient-centered care plan, the ACE Unit addresses and provides for the health care needs of older adults and returns them to their daily lives as soon as possible.
The ACE Unit features spacious single rooms with private bathrooms in a quiet area separate from other hospital services. Several other design modifications were made to make the patients stay as comfortable, safe and efficient as possible including non-skid floors, bedside recliners, soft lighting and a warm color palette as well as family gathering areas.
