Let's Beat Cancer Together
The National Cancer Institute estimates that one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer during his lifetime. Many cancers can be detected early through regular screenings which improve outcomes. It is important to speak to your health care provider about the appropriate screenings and schedule for you.
Most screenings are covered by insurance. Your family medical history or your personal health issues can modify these screening guidelines.
RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute provide exceptional expertise and knowledge in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer. And as New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center we offer the most advanced diagnostic modalities and treatment options.
Men 40 years and older should discuss the cancer screenings below with their physician:
Prostate Cancer Screening
Prostate cancer is caused by an excessive growth of cells in the prostate gland, which is part of the male reproductive system. It is a slow-growing cancer compared to other cancers, and most often found in a stage where it is highly treatable. A Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) screening test can be utilized for patients who may be at risk of prostate cancer. Men at average risk should speak to their health care provider to discuss the pros and cons of prostate cancer screening starting at age 45. If you are African American or have a father or brother who had prostate cancer before age 65, you should talk to your health care provider about screening beginning at age 40. If you decide to be tested, you should have the PSA test with or without a digital rectal exam. How often you are tested will depend on your PSA level.

Colorectal Cancer Screening
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the nation, but it is one of only a few cancers that can be prevented. Colorectal cancer is beatable and treatable, but only if caught early. Through proper screening, like a colonoscopy, a gastroenterologist can find and remove polyps hidden in the colon before they become cancerous. Sometimes, removing polyps can prevent cancer altogether. Individuals of average risk of colorectal cancer should begin regular screening at age 45. Individuals at higher risk should speak to their doctor about getting screened sooner.

Lung Cancer Screening
Lung cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States and a leading cause of cancer death, often because it is detected too late. A lung cancer screening with a low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan can detect cancer when it is most treatable. Individuals aged 50 to 80 years old who have smoked a pack a day for the last 20 years and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years should be screened for lung cancer every year. This is true even if you don’t have symptoms.
