Weight Loss: Let’s Be Healthy Together
We’ve become a nation obsessed with weight. But we seem to be losing sight of why we should lose weight.
At RWJBarnabas Health, we take a different approach to weight loss. Instead of emphasizing short term goals like reducing the size of your waist, we focus on long term benefits like reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and hypertension.
And for those whose best option is bariatric surgery, your journey begins with a nurse navigator who will be with you from the time you commit right through recovery.
Along the way you’ll learn about different surgical techniques, healthy eating, sensible exercise and support groups.
And once you find your healthy weight, you’ll look and feel better, too.
It’s not about losing weight overnight. It’s about staying healthy over time.
Weight Loss Options
If you’re considering bariatric surgery, start by taking a weight off your mind.
For those who need to lose fifty or more pounds, the healthy approach is to understand that you don’t have a weight problem, you have a medical problem — and one that requires supervision. Our centers throughout New Jersey offer a comprehensive approach to weight loss and bariatric surgery, and offer a variety of programs and treatments to help you find the optimal weight loss program and jump start a healthier lifestyle. Led by experienced bariatric surgeons, our programs provide a coordinated and supportive approach to the decision to pursue weight loss surgery. A discussion with your surgeon of the different types of weight loss surgery options will help you determine which treatment is best for you.
GASTRIC BAND SURGERY
Also referred to as the Lap Band procedure, is a bariatric procedure that
is often performed using several small incisions (laparoscopically). Gastric
band surgery is less complex than other bariatric surgery options and
is also reversible.
Gastric Band
GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY
Uses surgical staples to create a small stomach pouch which restricts the
amount of food you can eat at one time. It is considered the ‘gold
standard' of weight loss surgery resulting in reliable weight loss with
minimal side effects.
Gastric Bypass
GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY
Also known as sleeve gastrectomy, which reduces the size of the stomach.
This procedure can often be performed laparoscopically, using several
small incisions, and is our procedure of choice for obese teens (ages 15-21).
Gastric Sleeve
RWJBarnabas Health also offers non-surgical weight loss options including nutritional counseling programs and Orbera, a gastric balloon that helps you lose weight by enforcing portion control.
Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program
Childhood and adolescent obesity is an epidemic in the United States. As a result, growing numbers of children and teens are at increased risk for diseases traditionally seen only in adults, including heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. If weight loss surgery is deemed an option for an adolescent, age 15 to 18, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital offer a multidisciplinary weight management team and bariatric surgery program accredited as adolescent centers by The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
