Move Over Law
Move Over Law — IT’S THE LAW
The safety of our employees and patients is of the utmost importance. Every year over a dozen police, fire, and EMS personnel are killed after being struck by vehicles while operating at emergency scenes. Most of these deaths are easily avoidable by simply moving to another lane. As a result, 47 states, including New Jersey, have implemented a “Move-Over Law” that requires motorists to move over one lane when approaching a stationary, authorized emergency vehicle with flashing, blinking or alternating lights. If this is unsafe or unlawful, slow down below the speed limit and be prepared to stop, if necessary. Failure to do so could cost violators up to $500.
