Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program

Accreditation

The RWJBarnabas Health orthopaedic surgery residency program at Jersey City Medical Center received initial accreditation status from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in 2018, and now participates annually in the NRMP match.

Academics

Weekly Education Conferences

Bimonthly Journal Clubs

Every 2 months, attending surgeons moderate journal club meetings to discuss current topics in the literature. This provides residents an opportunity for open discussion with experienced attendings to gain broader insight and share ideas regarding the latest research.

Quarterly Cadaver Labs

Residents have the opportunity to participate in cadaver labs where the anatomy, surgical approach, and surgical techniques are practiced to allow residents an opportunity to gain experience outside of the operating room.

Quarterly Morbidity and Mortality Conferences

Orthopedic M&M cases are presented by residents with the corresponding attendings present to provide discussion and valuable insight into the cases.

Annual Grand Rounds/Chief Research Presentations

June

Orthopedic grand rounds will be hosted at a local venue where guest speakers will provide presentations on various topics. Graduating Chief residents present their senior research project/paper.

Orthopaedic In-Training Exam (OITE)

The OITEs are usually taken during the second weekend in November each year by every JCMC orthopedic surgery resident, including PGY1s. The test provides residents with an opportunity to guage their knowledge against other orthopedic surgery residents across the country in their corresponding year and against all years in order to help them better prepare for the AOAO Board Examination.

AOAO Required Courses & Conferences

AO Basic Fracture Course/OTA Basic Fracture Course

First year orthopaedic surgery residents are required to attend either the AO Basic Fracture Course or the OTA Basic Fracture Course where they will learn the fundamentals of fracture fixation.

AONA

ATLS Course

First year orthopaedic surgery residents are required attend a American College of Surgeons certified course in Advanced Trauma Life Support to prepare them for their orthopedic trauma rotations.

ATLS Courses

Orthopaedic Oncology/Pathology Course

Third year orthopaedic surgery residents are required to attend the Annual Mt. Sinai Musculoskeletal Oncology/Pathology Course in New York, NY.

AOAO Annual Meeting

Dates TBA

Prior to their PGY5 year, each resident will attend an AOAO annual meeting.

In addition to the required courses, residents are encouraged to attend other courses of their interest.
