General Information

Many challenges of daily life can make it difficult to cope. From aging, building a healthy family, or finding alternatives to chemical dependency, many types of conflicts can be challenging to manage. Our General Psychiatry Residency Program was born because Rutgers Health realizes that behavioral health and psychiatric services are an essential component in providing health care services. This program began in 2006 and provides physicians-in-training with the knowledge, technical experience, and humanistic skills necessary to provide high-quality, compassionate patient care.

The Program provides Residents with excellent Didactic Curriculum and Board Certification courses from PGY1-PGY4 resulting in achieving 100% board-certification rate every year. Trinitas Regional Medical Center operates one of the most comprehensive departments of Behavioral Health and Psychiatry in New Jersey. Services and a full continuum of care for adults, children and adolescents, and their families are offered.

What to Expect in the General Psychiatry Residency Program

Throughout the program, residents are challenged in many psychiatry subspecialties and gain experience in a variety of treatment modalities. Residents treat their own patients under the supervision of a board-certified psychiatrist in inpatient, outpatient, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, substance abuse, child psychiatry, consultation, and emergency psychiatry.

Our comprehensive training program provides rigorous and comprehensive instruction in many disciplines in a challenging, yet supportive atmosphere. Psychiatric services we offer are well integrated, and our training program includes instruction by faculty with extensive expertise in all fields. Residents will get the chance to treat their own patients, both in inpatient and outpatient settings, and be supervised by psychiatry experts.

We also feature training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family and group therapy, neuropsychological testing, and interviewing techniques. Trainees will gain experience as a team leader, by working with allied health professions through interdisciplinary rounds. These may include trainees from other teaching programs at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, such as social work and psychology programs.

One of the greatest strengths of our program is that all of the clinical experiences are available on site at Trinitas. Residents only need to travel outside our hospital for two months of Neurology training.
