RWJBarnabas Health Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Post-Graduate Training Program
The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Post-Graduate Program is a paid, 18-month training program affiliated with RWJBarnabas Health. This is the first emergency medicine advanced training program of its kind in New Jersey. It combines a rigorous clinical schedule with didactic education and support for advanced practice providers.
The program is open to highly qualified, board-certified physician assistants (PAs) and board-certified nurse practitioners (NPs).
Goals
The RWJBH Emergency Medicine APP Post-Graduate Program aims to provide a comprehensive and immersive experience that ensures the highest levels of competency and proficiency for emergency medicine advanced practice providers. The goals of the Emergency Medicine APP Post-Graduate Program are to:
- Train highly qualified APPs to provide high-level care across the entire emergency medicine spectrum
- Encourage open communication and collaboration across the various parts of the health care system
- Foster personal growth and development
- Provide mentorship
- Provide training in commonly encountered procedures performed in emergency medicine including training in advanced line placement and airway management, point of care ultrasound instruction, and much more
Curriculum
All APP Post-Graduates will follow a strict curriculum consisting of clinical rotations, didactic and simulation experiences, as well as routine evaluations.
Didactic Experiences
APP Post-Graduates will attend didactic sessions including:
- Weekly emergency medicine conferences with Emergency Medicine Residents
- Monthly in-person small group didactic sessions provided by specialty experts in addition to small group breakout sessions
- Intermittent structured lectures with subspecialty experts
- Specialty conferences throughout the year
Sessions will include:
- Case study presentations
- Monthly Journal Club
- Diagnostic interpretation (for example, image review and EKG interpretation)
- Simulation
Advanced Certification
We can provide the opportunity to obtain ATLS and PALS certification after enrollment. BLS and ACLS certification is required prior to program start date.
Rotations
Each rotation includes objectives, quizzes and evaluations. Rotations vary from 2 to 8 weeks in length, and are located at various sites throughout the RWJBarnabas Health system.

- Emergency Departments across the RWJBarnabas Health System (including Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Community Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Somerset Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus, Clara Maas Medical Center )
- Observation Medicine
- Pediatric Emergency Department
- Medical/Surgical ICU
- Neuro ICU
- Ultrasound
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Dermatology/Plastic Surgery
- Otolaryngology
- OBGYN
- Optional Electives
Simulation
Each APP Post-Graduate will receive dedicated simulation time via various simulation modalities throughout the program.
Evaluations
APP Post-Graduates will be evaluated during each rotation in addition to receiving formative and summative feedback. Fellows will also have and quarterly meetings with the program director/medical director or designee to discuss clinical progress and career planning. Additionally, the APP fellows will be asked to provide feedback regarding their rotation, didactic and clinical experiences.
About Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) in New Brunswick, New Jersey will serve as the home base for the Emergency Medicine APP Fellowship. During the 18-month program, the APP fellows will also be assigned to rotations at multiple hospitals throughout the RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH) system to achieve a vast and all-encompassing emergency medicine educational experience within New Jersey's largest health care system.

Eligibility
To apply for the RWJBarnabas Health Emergency Medicine APP Fellowship, you must have or be in the process of completing the following requirements:
- Graduation from an accredited masters degree program for physician assistants or accredited masters degree program in advanced practice nursing with the ability to treat the lifespan

Have a national board certification by the start of the program from a
national certifying organization such as:
- National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
- American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN)
- Have a current license and certification to practice as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of New Jersey by the start of the program
- Flexibility to work various shifts (nights, weekends, and 40- to 60-hour work week), ability to attend lectures and clinical rotations
- Be eligible for or have an active Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate and Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) license in the State of New Jersey

Stipend
- $127,500 stipend during the 18-month program
- Number of hours per week varies and depends on the rotation/clinical setting. Below is a sample weekly & monthly block schedule
- All APP Post-Graduates are eligible to receive full benefits, 401K, health insurance and paid vacation
