12/17/20: Last week, the Rutgers Health - JCMC Orthopedics Residency held a virtual journal club discussing Surgical Approaches to Total Hip Arthroplasty, mediated by Dr. Erik Zachwieja. Program-wide journal clubs are held bimonthly.
10/26/20: The American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery annual meeting was held virtually this week. Dr. Arianna Gianakos won first place for her study titled "Clinical Application of Concentrated Bone Marrow Aspiration in Orthopaedics: A Systematic Review." Congratulations Dr. Gianakos!
06/22/2020: The JCMC Resident Graduation Ceremony was held last week in Jersey City, NJ. We are very proud of our graduates Dr. Justin Miller and Dr. John Michael Yingling for all of their accomplishments! Congratulations Dr. Miller and Dr. Yingling! We will miss you.
06/11/20: The New York Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Residents and Fellows Research Night was held virtually this week. Dr. Richard Pizzo was chosen to present his study titled "Radiographic and Clinical Outcomes of Distal Radius Fractures Treated with Volar Locking Plates versus Fragment-Specific Plating Constructs." Congratulations Dr. Pizzo!

02/27/20: Last week, the RWJBarnabas Health orthopaedic surgery residents participated in a cadaver lab in Jersey City, NJ. The focus of the lab was to familiarize our residents with robotic-assisted arthroplasty systems, an exciting area of orthopedic innovation. These labs are held quarterly and give our residents the opportunity to practice surgical approaches and utilizing orthopedic implants.
09/16/19: The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society 2019 Annual Meeting was held in Chicago this past weekend. Two of our residents were chosen to present their research and had the opportunity to spend the week attending lectures, exhibits, and discussions learning about the latest in foot and ankle surgery. Congratulations Dr. Gianakos and Dr. Heiman!
Dr. Erick Heiman gave a podium presentation titled "Opioid Consumption Following Outpatient Foot and Ankle Surgery: A Prospective Analysis" demonstrating over-prescription of post-operative opioid pain medication and need for stricter prescribing practices by orthopedic surgeons.
Dr. Arianna Gianakos presented a poster entitled "Gender Related Reporting within Foot and Ankle Subspecialty Orthopaedic Literature" demonstrating that the reporting of gender specific differences is lacking in the current orthopaedic literature. Her study also showed that within studies reporting gender related analysis, a high percentage of studies demonstrated a significant difference in outcomes between male and female patients.
09/06/19: On August 22nd and August 29th, the RWJBarnabas Health orthopaedic surgery residents participated in two cadaver labs in Parsippany, NJ. These labs are held frequently throughout the year and give our residents the opportunity to practice surgical approaches and utilizing orthopedic implants.
07/01/19: Last week, the RWJBH orthopaedic surgery residents hosted our annual "Intern Bootcamp" to train our incoming resident physicians, Dr. Attenasio, Dr. Heiman, and Dr. Salandra. We are excited for them to join our team and looking forward to working with them over the next few years. Good luck Andrea, Erick, and Jon!

06/12/2019: The JCMC-RWJBanabas Health Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program graduation ceremony was held at Chart House in Weehawken, NJ. We are very proud of our graduates Dr. Donald Adams and Dr. Eric Boe for all of their accomplishments! We are also pleased to announce that both of our graduates once again successfully completed part 1 of the AOBOS board certification exam. Congratulations Dr. Adams and Dr. Boe! We will miss you.
Annual Grand Rounds 2019 and Guest Speaker Dr. Melvin P. Rosenwasser
06/05/2019: The JCMC-RWJBanabas Health Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program hosted our 2nd Annual Grand Rounds & Chief Resident Presentations with honored guest speaker Dr. Melvin P. Rosenwasser. There was a lively upper extremity trauma case discussion with Dr. Rosenwasser over dinner, as well as an interesting talk by Dr. Rosenwasser on orthopaedic innovations in upper extremity surgery at the Jersey City Museum. Our chief residents also presented their original research projects on pelvis insufficiency fractures and calcaneus fractures.

04/02/19: The New Jersey Orthopaedic Society's 44th Annual Symposium was held on March 29th and 30th at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick, NJ. Three of our residents were selected to present original research and case presentations. Congratulations Drs. Jankowski, Gianakos, and Buzin!
AAOS 2019 Annual Meeting
03/17/19: The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2019 Annual Meeting was held last week in Las Vegas, NV. Several of our residents were selected to present original research projects and had the opportunity to spend the week attending various lectures, exhibits, and discussions learning about the latest in orthopaedic surgery.
- Dr. Richard Pizzo gave a podium presentation titled "Are Arthroplasty Procedures Really Better in the Treatment of Proximal Humerus Fractures? A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review."
- Dr. Jaclyn Jankowski presented a scientific exhibit on proximal humerus fractures titled "How to Achieve Success with Fixed Angle Locked Plating for Open Reduction Internal Fixation of 3 and 4 part Proximal Humerus Fractures"
- Dr. Jay Shah presented his poster titled "Intramedullary Nail versus Locked Plate Fixation in the Treatment of Periprosthetic Fractures about Total Knee Arthroplasty: Is One Better Than the Other?"
- Also exhibited was a poster by Dr. Gianakos and Dr. Saad regarding the use of tranexamic acid in revision knee arthroplasty and a poster by Dr. Gianakos about methods of femoral fixation in ACL reconstruction.

10/29/18: The Jersey City Medical Center Orthopaedics team welcomes international rotating professor Dr. Pierre Ogedad, Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Hôpital Sacré Coeur in Milot, Haiti. Dr. Ogedad is the first of many visiting international professors that we will be hosting this year at JCMC. Welcome Dr. Ogedad!

JCMC Orthopaedic Surgery Newsletter
11/20/15: In preparation for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program interviews, our first annual newsletter was created to provide more information regarding the newest information pertaining to our program.
ACGME Accreditation Status
11/05/15: The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at Jersey City Medical Center Barnabas Health is an Osteopathic Residency Program and a member of the American Osteopathic Association. We have formed our Orthopaedic Surgery ACGME Accreditation Committee, which is currently in the process of preparing our ACGME accreditation application with an anticipated submission for pre-accreditation this coming Spring of 2016. Pre-accreditation status allows our graduates to participate in ACGME accredited fellowship programs as well as participate in the Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) in certain Orthopaedic sub-specialties.
The Orthopedic Institute at Jersey City Medical Center
07/1/15: Jersey City Medical Center Barnabas Health is proud to announce the opening of The Orthopaedic Institute. This endeavor includes a dedicated Orthopaedic wing with specialized nurses certified in Orthopaedic nursing, as well as numerous private rooms for our patients to recover from their surgery.
