Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

at Jersey City Medical Center

The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program offers a robust clinical environment which nurtures fellows’ progressive responsibility and graduated autonomy. This team-based collaborative care model of education aims to maintain a culture of wellness and esprit de corps where resident support, camaraderie, and mentorship are a top priority. The program embraces the triple-aim of high-value healthcare, and will provide training in Gastroenterology (GI) motility, advanced endoscopy, and hepatology in a clinical learning environment. The program aims to cultivate physicians as lifelong learners and leaders in Gastroenterology, emphasizing academic training and comprehensive knowledge of common GI issues prevalent in Jersey City’s diverse population. This includes a newly migrated, growing young professional community that will benefit from ongoing preventative GI care.

Program Goals

  1. Along with our existing Internal Medicine (IM) continuity clinic, the program will establish subspecialty clinics to provide fellows with experience in GI motility, IBD, hepatology and GI cancer. Under direct faculty supervision, the fellows will participate in outpatient clinics dedicated to providing care for our diverse population, including the uninsured and underinsured.
  2. The program will continue to grow and enhance relationships with Rutgers Health allied professional schools, offering fellows the opportunity to participate in team-based collaborative care.
  3. The fellows will actively participate in the education of the IM residents, which will provide them with opportunities for scholarship and lifelong learning.
  4. One of our core faculty members, an expert in patient safety and quality improvement, currently serves as Co-Chair of the Rutgers Health GMEC PS/QI subcommittee. The program will leverage this expertise to provide mentoring and education in these fields.

Commitment to Ensure Diversity

The leadership at Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC) has assembled a workforce that is capable of understanding, communicating and providing service to individuals from the most varied backgrounds. Jersey City is the most diverse city in New Jersey, and the second most diverse in the United States. Over 75 languages are spoken in Jersey City Schools. Jersey City truly represents a melting pot of nations, ethnicity, and cultural traditions. The program will follow JCMC's long tradition of recruiting residents and faculty who reflect the racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, spiritual, and sexual diversity of the community it serves. The program will also adopt a structured interview format with some standardized questions designed to identify candidates that reflect the program’s commitment to the community and diverse workforce. In addition, interviewers will be blinded to USMLE scores. An interviewer's perception of the candidate’s abilities can be biased by their USMLE scores. Recent studies have shown that interviewer bias can affect candidates’ interview scores.
