• Dr. Hoppo is a highly trained and nationally recognized foregut (esophagus and stomach) surgeon. Dr. Hoppo specializes in the treatment of foregut disease such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), swallowing difficulties, esophageal motility disorders such as achalasia, Barrett’s esophagus, gastroparesis, and esophageal and gastric cancer. His expertise includes complex minimally invasive (robotic) foregut surgery and advanced endoscopic procedures such as endoscopic resection (EMR, ESD), radiofrequency ablation and Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), in addition to esophageal physiology testing.

    After all training as a general surgeon was completed in Japan, Dr. Hoppo completed a 2-year minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Since then, Dr. Hoppo has actively practiced as an attending foregut surgeon for >10 years and had significantly contributed to build the growth of the Esophageal Institute and Minimally Invasive Foregut Surgery Fellowship program at the Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA. Now, he joined the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School as an Associate Professor of Surgery.

    Dr. Hoppo is not only a skilled surgeon but also a skilled endoscopist, and was the first to perform peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) to treat achalasia in the Pennsylvania State in 2012. Dr. Hoppo was invited to teach and perform the first 2 POEMs in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Hoppo is an innovator and one of the Nations experts in the diagnosis and treatment of reflux disease that impacts the larynx and pulmonary system (laryngopharyngeal reflux). He has helped to innovate critical diagnostic modalities that have improved the sensitivity of diagnosis in these patients and ultimately changed the field. He has published and presented at national and international meetings and is recognized as a leader in this field. Dr. Hoppo was one of the co-founders of American Foregut Society and is currently the president of Japan Foregut Society.
