Sabin Motwani, MD
- Radiation Oncology
Personalized medicine, cutting-edge research, state-of-the-art equipment, nationally renowned faculty — these are the reasons I decided to train at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2007 and join the faculty thereafter. Prior to my residency, I completed a two year breast cancer research fellowship in the Department of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
I have a joint faculty appointment at Rutgers Cancer Institute and Rutgers Cancer Institute at the University Hospital/New Jersey Medical School in Newark as a central nervous system (brain/spine) and genitourinary (prostate, bladder, and testicular) cancer specialist. In 2013, I became the Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at our satellite in Newark.
I work closely with neurosurgeons and medical oncologists in our Neuro-Oncology Clinic as part of a multidisciplinary team to educate patients on their treatment options thereby empowering them to make informed decisions. I am well trained in the advanced techniques of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), and Gamma Knife Perfexion™ stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). We are one of only four centers in the state of New Jersey that has a Gamma Knife Perfexion™ machine to very precisely treat brain tumors in one day. My current research interests are developing an extensive brain atlas for radiation oncologists as well as how does the use of social media impact oncologic care.
Within the Cancer Institute's Prostate Cancer Program, I collaborate with another multidisciplinary team of urologists and nationally renowned medical oncologists. We offer patients robotic prostatectomy, IMRT, SBRT, low and high dose rate (LDR/HDR) seed implant brachytherapy and active surveillance for treating prostate cancer. Our Urological Oncology Program is actively involved in designing clinical trials and enrolling interested patients who may benefit from the latest research while advancing the oncology field for generations to come.
In 2015, we started implementing proton therapy for my patients at the Cancer Institute, which is an emerging treatment only performed in a handful of cities around the country. Proton therapy localizes radiation to the tumor while minimizing dose to the surrounding tissues more effectively than conventional radiotherapy. It is effective in a broad range of tumors including brain, spine, prostate, and pediatric cancers. Rutgers Cancer Institute, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey, provides my patients access to this treatment modality and other resources not available elsewhere.
I am a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the largest radiation oncology society in the world; the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the Society of NeuroOncology (SNO). I have published several papers and presented them at the ASTRO and American Radium Society annual meetings. On behalf of ASTRO I’ve also made a webinar titled “Radiation Therapy for the Primary Care Provider”, which educates all primary care providers about the benefits of radiation therapy and increases awareness about our specialty. I currently am a reviewer for six radiation oncology peer-reviewed journals including the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, the official journal of ASTRO. I enjoy teaching and am an active lecturer in the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Radiation Oncology Residency Program, educating the radiation oncologists of tomorrow.
I invite you to experience our compassionate individualized care and look forward to meeting you.
When I’m not treating patients, I am usually on a plane traveling somewhere. I enjoy food, whether it’s eating out or cooking. My other interests are photography, watching the Lakers play, reading, and playing the piano.
