Martin P. Michalewski, MD
- OB/GYN | Surgery-Robotic | Urogynecology
Martin P. Michalewski, M.D., F.A.C.O.G, a urogyncologist, has an impressive list of credentials in his work with robotic and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. He helped pioneer many urogynecological laparoscopic procedures which have improved the quality of life for so many women who have experienced urinary incontinence, cystocele, rectocele, uterine/vaginal prolapse, pelvic pain, bleeding, fibroids and others.
Dr. Michalewski received the achievement award from the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons, distinguishing him as among the best laparoscopic surgeons and he is a recipient of Outstanding Researcher Status for his past research activities. He currently serves as proctor, consultant and lecturer for major surgical companies such as Ehicon’s Endo Surgery, Gynacare Women’s Health and Urology, American Medical Systems, Intuitive Surgical’s DaVinci Robotic System, Wisap GmbH, Synergy Surgical and Covidien’s SILS, teaching other surgeons newest minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Dr. Michalewski believes that living with urinary incontinence, prolapse, pessaries, bleeding, pain or fibroids and not being able to exercise or wearing pads do not have to be a part of any woman’s daily life. Many of these conditions have negative impact on daily activities or sexual function. Often women feel that they have to accept these conditions and they never seek medical help. Significant advances have been made in this field and procedures are done now on outpatient bases, which require only a few hours of hospital stay with return to work or daily activities in few days to one week in most cases. There are also multiple new medical treatment options present today that can be employed in place of surgery.
Dr. Michalewski graduated from Medical University of Gdansk, Poland where he also trained and worked as attending urogynecologist. Since his arrival in US in early 1990’s, he studied, trained, conducted research and worked at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus, New York State Institute for Basic Research on Staten Island, then continued his clinical training at Saint Vincent Medical Center, Sisters of Charity Health Care System, Staten Island, and New York Hospital Flushing Medical Center, Queens. For the past several years, Dr. Michalewski provided exclusive urogynecologic services for hospitals in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, serving as Director of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery for South Florida Women’s Health Associates, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, FL.
“The field of urogynecology and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery really evolved in the early 2000s,” he says. “In the past, women were expected to live with these problems. But now women live longer and are more active, and they deserve to maintain a high quality of life.”
Dr. Michalewski lives with his wife and son in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He enjoys sports, reading but is happiest when he’s playing with his son.
