Jonathan K. Smith, MD
- Surgery-General | Surgery-Oncology
Born in Alabama, I enlisted in the Army and served as a medic and paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division until 1989. I then obtained an Associate of Science degree from Valley Forge Military College in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where I was early commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. I completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in biochemistry. I then attended the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1997, and was commissioned as a Captain in the Army. My residency in General Surgery was completed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in 2002. While assigned to Ft. Campbell, I was deployed to Iraq twice as a surgeon attached to a forward surgical team with the 101st Airborne and awarded a Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.
After completing military service, I practiced general surgery in rural Alabama in a solo practice for eight years prior to beginning a fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, which I completed in 2020. I am excited to return to central New Jersey to continue my surgical practice.
