Gopal Desai, MD
- Radiation Oncology
I am thrilled to be part of RWJ Barnabas Health Medical Group and join both Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey as well as Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton. I have spent the past 16 years caring for patients in the Central New Jersey area and I feel a strong sense of commitment to the region and compassion towards the patients who undertake this courageous journey, and as such am excited to continue to care for them.
I completed my medical school training at Kurnool Medical College in Andhra Pradesh, India. After working in both India and England for several years, I moved to the United States in the 1990s and completed residency training at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis. I subsequently worked at several institutions, most recently as the chairman of radiation oncology at St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, a position I held for 16 years. My interests include multimodality treatment of cancer with radiosurgery approach to oligometastatic disease, ultra-hypofractionation of prostate cancer and breast cancer.
Philosophy of Care:
A cancer diagnosis is a challenging and unfamiliar terrain for patients and their loved ones to navigate. As such, I take time with every patient to answer all questions they have about their diagnosis and treatment
options moving forward. I believe it is a privilege to care for patients diagnosed with cancer, and it is my goal to provide exceptional and compassionate care to them and their families. The determination, grit, and grace of caring for cancer patients never ceases to amaze me. My goal is to aid patients on their medical journey, to cure when possible, to palliate when needed, and to always provide comfort and support. I strive to meet this goal at all times.
