David A. Abrutyn, MD, has expertise in sports medicine, with emphasis on injuries of the knee and shoulder. Dr. Abrutyn also treats pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients for a wide range of orthopedic problems. His skills include nonsurgical, surgical, arthroscopic, and other minimally invasive orthopedic surgical techniques and reconstructive orthopedic procedures. He is Medical Director of the Joint Surgery Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Somerset, Associate Chair of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Robert Johnson University Hospital at Somerset, and President of Somerset Ambulatory Surgery Center.
A gifted teacher, Dr. Abrutyn is an associate instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America Orthopaedic Learning Center. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and New Jersey Orthopaedic Society. He is the author or coauthor of articles that are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Techniques in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review. He is also the co-writer of a chapter on ACL reconstruction techniques in the book The Knee: AANA Advanced Arthoscopic Surgical Techniques. Dr. Abrutyn has delivered local, regional, national, and international invited presentations in his field. He is a former editorial board member and current reviewer for the Journal of Arthroscopy.
Dr. Abrutyn is Team Orthopedic Surgeon for the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club and Immaculata High School Athletics in Somerville. He is Former Team Physician for Sky Blue Football Club (FC) New Jersey Women's Professional Soccer Team. He is a recipient of the Arthroscopy Association of North America Resident Fellow Basic Science Essay Award and Long Island Jewish Medical Center Resident of the Year Award. Dr. Abrutyn has earned the MDx Medical, Inc. Patient's Choice Most Compassionate Doctor Award, NJ Monthly and Healthy Living Top Doctor Award.
Dr. Abrutyn's practice focuses on sports medicine injuries, with an emphasis on arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder and knee surgery. His expertise in the Knee includes anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, revision ACL reconstruction, meniscal repairs, ligament repairs, patella instability procedures, and minimally invasive total knee replacement. In the Shoulder, he focuses on arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery, instability procedures, biceps tendon repair, impingement and total shoulder replacement and reverse total shoulder replacement.
