As a competitive martial artist in Taekwondo and Wushu in her youth and a weekend athlete warrior now, Dr. Carrer, has also focused on the non-operative treatment of orthopaedic and spinal disorders and guides patients not only through treatment of present ailments but through prevention of future degenerative conditions associated with activity and aging . Dr. Carrer treats patient individually and integrates multimodal treatments to maximize a rapid functional recovery. Dr. Carrer’s scope of practice emcompasses the management of degenerative, traumatic and deformity–related conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral spine. Dr. Carrer’s surgical expertise focuses on minimally invasive techniques, lateral approaches, trans-sacral and endoscopic procedures and motion preservation. In particular, along with her partner Dr. Frazier, founder of New York City Spine, she is developing minimally surgical techniques for the treatment of failed back syndrome and revision spine surgery, so that patients with prior failed back or neck surgery can experience a fast recovery with minimal downtime and complications. “It has been very rewarding as a spine surgeon to work at New York City Spine. We see a wide variety of patients, but since our main office is in Columbus Circle next to the Lincoln Center and New York’s theatre district we do see a substantial amount of professional dancers. It is very rewarding to see a 70 year patient return to his activities of daily living 6 weeks after lumbar fusion surgery, but to see a professional dancer go back to unrestrictived activity only 6 weeks after surgery is a game changer. And we are still looking into new technology to make surgery safer and with quicker recovery time. These are very exciting times.” A.C
