Alexander Ivanov, MD

Dr. Ivanov joined Cardiology Associates of Somerset County in July of 2002 adding to their services comprehensive and passionate arrhythmia management. His expertise in the current concepts of abnormal heart rhythms covers areas from evaluation of patients with palpitations, dizziness, and passing out to the prevention of sudden cardiac death. His clinical activities focus on identifying the best treatment strategies for arrhythmia patients with the goal of safely achieving long-lasting results. He prides himself in detailed tailoring of his approach to every single patient he cares for. Dr. Ivanov is an attending physician at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset (Somerville, NJ) and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (New Brunswick, NJ). He earned his medical degree in Europe. Dr. Ivanov graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1983 from the First Leningrad Medical Institute of St. Petersburg, one of Russia’s oldest and most renowned medical schools. After graduation, he worked at the City Hospital of St. Petersburg until 1992, serving as an attending physician in the Department of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and later, as an intensive cardiologist in the Coronary Care Unit. After moving to the United States in 1992, he scored in the 98th percentile on the National Boards and joined Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. At Hahnemann, he completed his American Internal Medicine residency, winning the university’s award for the highest score on the National In-Service Exam. Then, he completed his fellowship in Cardiology at Lankenau Hospital (Pennsylvania) in 2000. Finally, he continued to specialize in the management of arrhythmias and completed a fellowship in Electrophysiology by 2002 at Hahnemann University Hospital. Dr. Ivanov has conducted clinical research on heart disease and has been published in European and American journals (for example, American Journal of Cardiology in 2000 and Europace in 2001). He also wrote the chapter on electrocardiography for Clive Rosendorff's Essential Cardiology (WB Saunders, 2006). In 2005, Dr. Ivanov spent some time in Milan (Italy) in one of the most prestigious electrophysiology labs in the world, learning from a world-renowned electrophysiologist Dr. Carlo Pappone. There, he had an opportunity to expand on the most advanced electrophysiology techniques. Presently, he is one of the electrophysiologists in this area of the country who performs ablation for atrial fibrillation. In addition, he performs other electrophysiology procedures, such as biventricular pacemaker and defibrillator implantation. Dr. Ivanov is one of the skilled electrophysiologists in the northeastern part of the country who utilizes robotic technology for his most challenging procedures. These procedures include ablation of atrial fibrillation, atrial and ventricular tachycardias, as well as supraventricular tachycardias. This robotic approach allows unparalleled improvement in the safety and precision of these complex procedures for his patients. In 2014, Dr. Ivanov was appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers Medical School. Dr. Ivanov has been consistently on the Honor Roll at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset for patient satisfaction since he joined our practice. He enjoys his teaching responsibilities for the residents and physician staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset. He has presented several teaching Grand Rounds for our medical community, receiving the Recognition Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Ivanov is Board-Certified in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Cardiovascular Disease, Nuclear Cardiology, Adult Comprehensive Echocardiography, and Internal Medicine. Dr. Ivanov is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society (formerly known as North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology), and the American College of Cardiology.
