Transplant Short Stay Unit Opens
The Transplant Short Stay Unit, at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, is available to care for the special needs of kidney and pancreas transplant recipients. The new unit is designed to facilitate early discharge from the hospital, prevent hospital admission, and provide outpatient infusions.
The Short Stay Unit offers patients individualized care in an atmosphere that caters to their needs as transplant recipients. Patient care is overseen by transplant physicians, a transplant nurse practitioner and a highly skilled transplant nursing staff which is well versed in the specialty of kidney and pancreas transplants.
Treatment, patient status, and laboratory monitoring -- including immunosuppressive drug levels and evaluation -- are available and will consistently be communicated to the referring physician.
Available treatments include most I.V. infusions, all immunosuppressive agents, blood transfusions, transplant education, and evaluation and management of stable conditions. Treatment can include, but is not limited to:
- Immunosuppression (including treatment of transplant rejection)
- Treatment of non-life threatening infection
- Treatment of dehydration, electrolyte imbalances
- Treatment of anemia: I.V. iron, blood transfusions
- Transplant education
- Transplant research trials involving pharmacokinetics and observation
