Burn Disaster & Emergency Preparedness
As New Jersey’s only designated burn treatment facility The Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas takes the lead in establishing burn disaster response throughout the northeast region.
A 96-hour burn mass casualty incident (BMCI) plan goes into effect only when a burn disaster is declared by the Burn Medical Director and/or the New Jersey State Department of Health and Human Services. (NJ DOHHS)
Following American Burn Association recommendations for disaster response, primary triage is conducted over the first twenty-four hours for patients to be transported to NJ hospitals designated by The Burn Center as Tier Facilities. Secondary triage is conducted over the next seventy-two hours to identify which of those patients should be transferred to either The Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas or to Eastern Regional Burn Disaster Consortium burn centers.
