Comprised of 16 surgical, diagnostic and support sections, the Department of Surgery combines the skills of Cooperman Barnabas' surgeons with expert perioperative care by specially trained nurses and other health care professionals. The Department provides a range of complete to minimally invasive cardiac procedures, cataract surgery, laser surgery, plus non-invasive diagnostic testing for major and peripheral artery disease. The Department has an independently approved residency program in general surgery, and provides training for rotating otolaryngology residents.
- The Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas is New Jersey's only state certified burn unit and provides treatment for patients of all ages from throughout the state.
- The Cancer Surgery Service of Cooperman Barnabas offers expert, state-of-the-art surgery for the simplest to the most complex oncology problems. Designed specifically to meld into a multidisciplinary care plan combining surgery with radiation therapy and chemotherapy as necessary, our expert surgical oncologists emphasize patient-centered, compassionate, and holistic care.

The Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas, the state's only certified burn treatment facility, is staffed by over 90 professionals in a dozen specialty areas. Since 1977, burn patients of all ages have been transported to The Burn Center by first aid squads, Cooperman Barnabas' Burn Transport Service or by State Police helicopter. The Heart Hospital of New Jersey at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is
part of the well-established cardiac program at Newark Beth Israel Medical
Center. The two hospitals, under the direction of Craig R. Saunders, M.D.,
Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery for RWJBarnabas Health, is setting
new standards in adult cardiac surgery. The cardiac team is comprised
of cardiac specialists from some of the nation's finest cardiac programs
and includes cardiothoracic anesthesiologists, clinical nurse coordinators,
physician's assistants, advanced practice nurses, specially trained cardiac
surgery and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) nurses, perfusionists
and many more specialized health care providers. The team is dedicated
to working exclusively with heart patients, their families and significant
others, and providing the most comprehensive array of diagnostic and therapeutic
adult and pediatric cardiac services in the state.

The Cooperman Barnabas Renal Transplant Centers at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center are among the largest in the Northeast and the busiest in the United States, treating more patients than any other facility in New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, or Boston. Patients with end-stage renal disease may receive the full spectrum of care, including comprehensive education about the transplant process, cadaver or living donor transplantation, and pre- and post-transplantation services.
For more than 30 years, the Cooperman Barnabas Renal Transplant Centers have been recognized as pioneers in the field of transplantation, performing kidney, simultaneous pancreas/kidney and pancreas-after-kidney transplants. They have performed several "medical firsts" in the state, including transplantation on the youngest patient in New Jersey as well as the first laparoscopic kidney retrieval. The Transplant Team is comprised of nephrologists, surgeons, urologists, nurse coordinators, specially trained staff nurses, dietitians, social workers and support staff. As part of its effort to provide the highest quality care, the Transplant Department sponsors a variety of support groups.

As a leading provider of outpatient medical and surgical procedures in New Jersey, this facility houses seven full-service, multi-specialty operating rooms, three gastrointestinal endoscopy suites and three minor procedure rooms. The Surgery Center has special accommodations for pediatric patients and a staff of pediatric anesthesiologists. Separate adult and pediatric preparatory and recovery areas are offered.
