Surgeon of Excellence - Pediatric and Adolescent Robotic SurgeryRWJBarnabas Health has achieved the first-ever Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Pediatric and Adolescent Robotic Surgery in the United States. This designation recognizes our commitment to a high standard of delivery of quality patient care and safety, and means that we meet nationally and internationally recognized standards.

Customized Care for Kids

Our Pediatric General Surgery Program is one of only a few full-service surgical programs in New Jersey devoted exclusively to children’s care. We work closely with patients and families to prepare them for their procedure and ultimately provide seamless and comprehensive care. Our specially trained surgeons also operate on children ranging from newborns through adolescents.

All routine and relatively simple pediatric general surgery operations are performed in a congenial, same-day surgery setting. Parents are with their child most of the time, even in the recovery room.

To relieve anxieties or fears about surgery, our pediatric preoperative programs, led by Child Life specialists, feature:

  • Orientation tours
  • Interactive presentations
  • Medical play
  • Opportunities for children to ask questions

Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery

As a leading New Jersey health care provider — especially when it comes to pediatric surgical care — we are proud to be a leader when it comes to advanced surgical options.

When you bring your child to one of our facilities to discuss surgery, you can always talk with our compassionate physicians about the available surgical options.

Some of these options are minimally invasive procedures as well as robotic surgery.

  • Minimally invasive surgery is any technique involved in surgery that does not need a large incision. This relatively new approach allows the patient to recuperate faster with less pain. Not all conditions are suitable for minimally invasive surgery. Many surgery techniques now fall under minimally invasive surgery.
  • Robotic surgery uses a high-level computer system to enhance precision, control and dexterity during surgery. In a robotic surgical procedure, a computer is positioned between the surgeon’s hands and the tips of microinstruments, giving surgeons the control, range of motion and 3D visualization characteristic of open surgery. The techniques allow the surgeon to operate through several small incisions about the size of a dime.

Neither of these procedure types are always applicable for every condition warranting surgery.

Your pediatric surgeon will work with your child and you to find the perfect surgical care plan to deliver the best outcome.
