Caring for Neurological Complications from Cancer

Having cancer and treating it can have significant impacts on the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). Some of the most common neurological complications from cancer are radiation-induced injury to the brain, spine and peripheral nerves, as well as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Brain metastases are the most prevalent type of complication, and they affect 20 to 40 percent of cancer patients. Stroke, hemorrhage, nerve and muscle damage can occur. Infectious impediments can also develop due to cancer’s effect on the immune system, according to a study in American Family Physician.

These are complex cases that require expert diagnosis and treatment, and highly coordinated care. Our oncologists work with care teams and patient navigators to assist patients who have neurological complications from cancer. We offer the breadth of experience and advanced technologies to diagnose and treat these complications.
