The Cancer Center
Together with Rutgers Cancer Institute, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Cancer Center at Clara Maass Medical Center provides advanced cancer services from diagnosis to treatment to survivorship close to home. Our multidisciplinary approach offers patients personalized treatment utilizing the expertise of medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, specialized nurses, registered dietitians and social workers. The groundbreaking cancer research at Rutgers Cancer Institute is the engine that drives access to the most advanced cancer treatments, where our discoveries become your care.
Pathologists at Clara Maass Medical Center are certified by the American Board of Pathology and have all completed additional Specialty Fellowships (Surgical Oncologic Pathology, Neuropathology and Cytology) at prestigious medical centers throughout the country. Diagnostic acumen is supplemented by special procedures including immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescent studies, In-Situ Hybridization, Flow Cytometry and Molecular Pathology.
Radiation Oncology services at Clara Maass Medical Center has earned national accreditation from the American College of Radiation Oncology and its services available include:
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) to precisely target tumors with a high dose of radiation.
- Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) used to direct the treatment, position the patient, and compare to the pre-therapy imaging from the treatment plan.
- High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy to deliver a higher dose of radiation than typical radiation therapy to a tumor while avoiding damage to healthy tissue.
- The only hospital in New Jersey to perform Eye Plaque brachytherapy for melanomas of the eye.
- Xofigo injections for men with advanced prostate cancer that has spread to the bone.
- State-of-the-art technology that enables physicians to map out treatment sites with precision and accuracy, treating the cancer while sparing normal tissue.
Since quality nursing care is an important part of the treatment, recovery and healing process, patients on our Oncology Unit are supported by a compassionate team of nurses experienced in chemotherapy administration and medical and surgical oncology, which is accredited nationally by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. Our nurse navigator is on staff to provide additional assistance to patients and their families.
Outpatient services may include treatment in our newly renovated Infusion Center, and diagnostic oncology capabilities include MRI (closed and open), CT scan, PET/CT, ultrasonography, early detection screenings, and stereotactic and CT-guided biopsy.
