Any degree of hearing loss, whether permanent or temporary, can affect speech and language development as well as psychosocial, cognitive, and educational development. Our pediatric audiology services provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient diagnostic evaluations and tests for children through the age of 21 years old.

Infants and children are often referred for Audiology Services for routine diagnostics and reasons related to:

  • Failed hearing screening
  • History of ear infection
  • Presence of neurological disorder
  • Initial screening for babies
  • Family history of hearing loss
  • Newborn hearing assessment
  • Global developmental delays
  • Auditory processing/perceptual difficulties

And for conditions such as:

  • Conductive hearing loss
  • Sensorineural hearing loss
  • Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD)
  • Cerumen (wax) impaction
  • Otitis media
  • Otitis externa
  • Mastoiditis
  • Cholesteatoma
  • Facial nerve palsy
  • Vestibular and balance disorders

Types of Pediatric Audiology Testing at CSH

Behavioral Audiometry: Includes Behavioral Observation (for children less than 6 months old), Visual Reinforcement (for children 6 months to 3 years old), Play Audiometry (for children 3-5 years old), and Conventional Audiometry (for school-aged children).

Non-Behavioral Audiometric Tests: Computerbased tests which include Tympanometry, Otoacoustic Emissions, and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) Test (non-sedated and for children up to 4 months).

Auditory Processing Evaluations: Available for children 7 years of age and older who meet diagnostic criteria.
