RWJBarnabas Health is seeking an experienced and passionate physician leader to serve as the Division Director of Infectious Disease at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBI), a leading teaching hospital partnered with Rutgers University. This position will report directly to the Chairman, Department of Medicine, Marc Cohen, and play a key role in administrative and clinical leadership decision making for the department. This is also a unique opportunity to oversee a larger Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and lead infectious disease services at the only NJ-based transplant center. The Division Director will also collaborate with regional hospitals, including Rahway and Trinitas, to expand the system’s infectious disease programs. The Director position will provide a unique opportunity to lead a multidisciplinary team focused on improving outcomes for patients with infectious diseases, while fostering clinical excellence, educational programs, and research innovation.

This Division Director position will initially have more clinical responsibilities and gain additional admin and mentoring duties over time. Ideally, the candidate will have the desire to create a sub-region for the division, allowing for potential to expand and over time, transition into the Regional Director of Infectious Disease.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership (12 Non-Clinical Hours Per Week)

  • Lead and grow the Infectious Disease (ID) division, focusing on innovative programs to enhance patient care.
  • Oversee clinical operations, including inpatient and outpatient services, with a commitment to clinical excellence and patient outcomes.
  • Hold quarterly division meetings and oversee monthly schedules for both inpatient and ambulatory services.
  • Develop specialized services, such as an expanded Travel Clinic and a transitions of care clinic for discharged patients.
  • Evaluate the potential for collaboration with other ID divisions in the region and develop a sub-region ID plan to oversee Rahway and Trinitas hospitals.

Clinical Duties (28 Hours Per Week)

  • Serve as the attending physician for the General ID service (35 weeks per year: .7 clinical / .3 admin. With ¼ weekends)
  • Oversee the General Infectious Disease Clinic, providing direct patient care and mentoring fellows in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, including FQHCs, LTACHs, and SNFs, to improve care and educate the public on infectious disease prevention and treatment.

Research and Academic Contributions

  • Serve as the Principal Investigator on research projects, promoting departmental research and scholarly activities.
  • Support the Infectious Disease Fellowship Director in developing research projects for fellows.
  • Foster educational excellence by mentoring faculty and providing lectures to medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Represent the division at institutional committees, contributing to performance improvement initiatives and quality assurance projects.

Additional Opportunities:

  • Work closely with the Infectious Disease Fellowship Program and maintain faculty appointments at Rutgers University.
  • Contribute to the growth of NBI’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and the only NJ-based transplant center.

Requirements:

  • MD or DO, board certified in Infectious Diseases.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of clinical ID experience, with a proven track record in building clinical programs that improve patient outcomes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to mentor early-career physicians and fellows.
  • Research experience.
  • Passion for advancing infectious disease treatment and education.
